Hi Rosalie,

I understand your reservations about the display of single blooms in
English boxes, but I would dare extend the same reservations to all
irises exhibited on the show bench in any method of display. I've never
been to an iris show, so my thoughts are strictly hypothetical, but
wouldn't it stand to reason that even the most perfect show stalk
couldn't possibly provide a complete picture of the worthiness of a
plant?

Dear Readers,

Garden judging and show judging are being mixed up here. It seems
in a discussion of arrangements or English boxes, some get confused
as to what a judge is judging. The judge is not judging a stalk in an
English box or an arrangement. (How can you judge the stalk when it
isn't even there)? He/she shouldn't even think of the stalk the flower came from. The judge is judging what he sees and how the individual parts are compatible and contribute to the harmony of the composition. I don't
think the public thinks an English Box or an arrangement is set up
as deception to the viewing public. These are just two more ways to
show off irises and to break the monotony of an all horticultural show.

Even in the horticultural section of a show, one cannot see the total
picture from which a stalk came. It could have come from a blooming
out clump, a rotting clump, a slow-growing clump; it might have been
staked. The judges judge the stalk 'as is' and 'at that moment' on
the show bench as the exhibitor has groomed and displayed it. This
is show judging and not garden judging. The same goes for arrangements
and English Boxes.

Some societies are using clear PVC pipe and are using the little
colored 'marbles' to help support the stalks, which is all for show.
The ISD show at the Dallas Convention in 2000 used the clear pipe, and it
made for a beautiful display.
