Janet,
The ones we used (SKIS in KY) looked like the ones depicted on the page you
gave . . . except ours were square with 5 holes rather than 6. One in each
corner & one in the middle. I, personally, felt it gave better balance.
Many designers recommend odd numbers for collections.
Ours are made of light weight plywood for portability. They had/have a
removable top that is covered in black fabric and the box is painted black.
Our group glued butter tubs to the bottom of the box and put a chunk of
Styrofoam in the tub <designer's brick stuff--I can't think of the name right
now><g> Water picks could be used but I don't think they would give equal
stability to the blooms.
In regard to the English Boxes, it is VERY important that the instructions in
the schedule be clear as to what is acceptable. If you want each bloom to be
from a different cultivar, you MUST say so in the schedule. Otherwise, you
could wind up with five blooms of GAY PARASOL winning the competition--which
is fine IF that's what the committee wants. It MUST be stated in the
schedule or the judges will give the class the broader interpretation.
I enjoyed the English Boxes and felt the all black box put the focus on the
blooms.
We used them for several years, but no longer. We have a rather small club
and I think everyone just had so much to do that they decided to quit using
them. We still have the boxes and I guess it could be done any year that
enough people wanted them.
Most years we have someone that wants to share a favorite iris with others
but they don't want to enter it nto competition. We have a 'display only'
table where these can be shown. The boxes could also be used (Not as English
Boxes persay) for this area.
Betty Wilkerson Zone 6 SouthCentral Kentucky (Since I moved into town, most
of my irises bloom before our local show and the boxes, used on the display
only table, would be a way for me to still participate in the show.)
