I agree with you that having perfect stem is the goal of iris shows,but the
english box gives you another way to display your iris.If you have two good
stems of a variety you aren't allowed to enter both.Another example is a
stem that was in peek bloom a week before the show,the terminal bud may be
gone but a lower bud may be perfect(a good stem that would not display well
in a show).The box also lets you display aflower from stems that have been
damaged (rain,hail,kids,a ride in the car to the show).
