Hmm:
The following criteria would seem to indicate that if I buy iris from an American hybridizer in the year of introduction, then immediately list them in a catalog for instant (re)sale overseas, they would be invalidated as AIS awards candidates. No such intent here; I'm just watching out for loopholes in the rules that probably need to be cleaned up. I'm an engineer, and typically detail oriented (read "anal"); being nitpicky is just part of the job. Anyone looking to make trouble for a major hybridizer could find such an opportunity tempting.

Again: to qualify for garden awards of the American Iris Society, an
iris originated in Europe must meet ALL of the following:
* It must be registered. Note: registration may be initiated through
a "local" registrar (we use associate registrars sponsored by iris
societies in various countries...SFIB sponsors Jean Peyrard in France),
but the application must be cleared through the AIS registrar to
finalize it.
*It must be introduced. Introduction is the formal offering for sale to
the public, and may be through catalogues, printed lists, iris bulletin
ads, etc. Internet sales can also qualify, but a hard copy of the web
offering must be supplied. A copy of the catalogue (or other means of
introduction) must be sent to the registrar by first class mail.
*The introduction MUST be through a North American nursery.
*The cultivar cannot be offered for sale by anyone else OUTSIDE OF NORTH
AMERICA until the following shipping season (which = next year for the
Northern Hemisphere).
*The foreign hybridizer must sign a statement saying that the above
conditions have been met, and this statement must be sent to the AIS
Awards Chairman.
************
Listing an iris cultivar for the first time in a French (or German or
British or Australian or....) catalogue, or first listing it for sale on
the internet by other than a North American nursery, will mean the
cultivar CANNOT be listed on the AIS Awards Ballot or win AIS garden
awards.
