Can't really speak for others, but I don't think anyone has deliberately
selected for short stalks . . . unless the goal was border bearded or medians.
The second question. . . well in my area both IMMORTALITY & GLISTENING ICICLE
bloom very short (as a rule) but BRIDGE IN TIME has never bloomed short for
me.
However, most seedlings from crossing IMMORTALITY & CORN HARVEST were short,
but not all. On still another hand, RETURNING CHAMELEON tends to be short for
me as are both parents. A friend grows RC at about 36-37 inches . . . taller
than I've ever seen it. Something in the soil?
Branching? I've been told you need to select for branching in pod parent
(higher percentage of traits) as it's hard to breed branching back into your
seedlings. My experience would say this might be true, but I've not run any
conclusive studies. Actually, I've not run any studies at all . . . conclusive or
otherwise. Just some general observations. <g>
Betty W. in South-central KY Zone 6 . . . . and may not even qualify as a
hybridizer! Who knows?
