Ah, indexing for a database is not the same thing as for a book... But what I think John was referring to was that the entries no longer had to be scanned, OCR'd and painstakingly proof-read. While they may well have ways to semi-utomate indexing, its still something that requires a human as far as I know. But then, this is third hand info from a library science major that I may have wrong... imagine indexing the contents of a library!
Hey, we still have bunches of holes to be filled in the Bulletin indexing project if anyone is looking for a winter activity. Dana Brown recently indexed some issues that were just added but there's still even some recent ones missing. Eventually I think that the AIS will be hosting it but for now the current index is at: www.gixxergirl.org/gsis/ais-index.html

As far as the delay in getting the online version after the print version is released, there is the consideration that the online version does in fact need more work than the printed one.I don't have any specific understanding of the entire process involved in getting the R & I information formatted into online database form, but I *think* I remember John saying that the process would be much easier now that the R & I info is computerized from start to finish. Or am I remembering that all wrong? In any event, it seems as though a delay in making the online R & I updates available is more than a little counterproductive to the success of the online project. I'd like to hear the board's rationale for making such a decision.
Since the cost to get the online access would be nowhere near enough to pay someone to do this work, I am guessing it has to be done by the ever shrinking base of volunteers, so even a year doesn't sound like that much to me.As far as I'm concerned, the only thing shrinking about the base of volunteers is the work we're being asked to do. I haven't been sent anything to do now in over a year!
