Linda,
My apologies, if some of this has been said already. I'm about two weeks behind on the postings.
At the fall board meeting, there was discussion of doing print-on-demand for the R&Is.
And to clarify matters somewhat, John Jones is only responsible for the electronic R&I as Chair of the Electronic Committee. The preparation of the R&Is and the recommendation for print copies is the responsibility of the Registrar, who will be Mike Lowe beginning in December. Then the print copies are sold in the Storefront, the responsibility of the Kieslings, who keep track of how many R&Is are sold.
I know everyone would like everything to happen instantaneously, but the electronic iris register is just coming out of its infancy. I'm sure that Mike, John and the Kieslings will figure out what will work best for the most people.

John, as you might imagine, I wasn't serious about personally offering
to pay for all the print versions <g> But lets round off your
guestimate to $20,000 cost.
Seems to me that a simple solution would be to require payment <prior>
to printing - add maybe 5% to that number of copies, just to allow a
little wiggle room for checks lost in the mail, new members. I don't
know what the lag time between preparation of photo ready copy and
printing is, but I suspect most folks know they want the following
year's R&I at least a year before it's for sale. Most probably know 10
years in advance!
Let's say only 1500 of your estimated 2500 people pay in advance, the
rest choosing to download or xerox other people's print copies.
Assuming that's still a large enough number to keep cost per copy down
to $7. Add on 5% or 75 copies just in case - that leaves AIS only at
risk for losing $525 for unbought copies.
Or only order the <exact> number of prepurchased copies, then xerox (or
print from a computer) additional copies if they are ordered late,
charging more for them.
