That's pretty much how seedlings have behaved for me as well.  I tried to
put some mature plants on the same regimen and saw a disaster beginning to
develope and quickly ended the experiment.  The seedlings that have done the
best for me grew in a bed very heavily amended with composted cow manure and
were put on a schedule of every other day soaking them heavily with an
overhead sprinkler.  Most grew very well.  No leaf spot either until they
were nearing mature sized plants.  Increases usually started in July, most
bloomed the following spring.  Temps soared above 100F.  They received sun,
but were essentially grown under the canopy of an oak tree for the middle of
the day.
