Re: HYB: Starting out: 101

Betty, this is a wonderful thread. Keep ignoring those packed boxes!

Cross the best with the best.....keep in mind that hybridizing goals can
be something other than a particular color class.

For example, my goal is to have a bunch of super reliable irises in my
own <death-to-irises> garden. Finding the 'best' has been a
challenge. Right now, the best are I. pallida, IMMORTALITY and HARVEST
OF MEMORIES, with VIOLET MIRACLE gaining on them. Not much diversity of
color or pattern in that bunch! But there is plenty of opportunity for
adding diversity from not quite as super reliable irises.

I really don't think my own lines will be ahead of anybody's, unless
global warming starts making everybody else's gardens be as bad as
mine! But you never know what will turn up, and the anticipation of
bloom on new seedlings beats waiting for anybody else's irises to open
up.
