HYB: Planting seeds

I have just started planting my iris seeds directly into their well
prepared bed. I have started with the ones I held over from 2002 when I
had no place to plant seedlings. I soaked these for ten days in early
July, and they have been wet in sealed plastic bags in the bottom of my
refrigerator ever since. Every cross so far has at least some seeds
sending out tiny roots. Some show almost 100% germination. I use an
old sharpie pen to make a hole > of an inch deep, then I drop in the
seed root down and press the soil around it from the side. I have
learned that these little roots come out of the pointed end of the seed,
so thats the end I drop in first even on those not yet showing any
growth. I am planting them 4 to 5 inches apart.

I wont disturb this years seeds until I get all of last years
planted. It will be interesting to see if they are also sprouting.
