  I have seen quite a few "new" introductions that would be on the compost as
  soon as they quit blooming.
  Just think. You have 40 seedlings. That's 40 times you get to see a iris
  bloom that no one else has, beautiful or ugly. And it is all yours. For me
  that is a super thrill. I like wide crosses.

  I agree with you, Mike. Most of the seedlings belong on the compost heap
too (my first-time blooms last year were particularly disappointing). But you
keep hoping, and every new seedling that forms a stalk is good for a couple of
weeks of eager anticipation (except for my Reincarnation x Mulled Wine cross;
after the first few, I can't wait to toss even the unseen ones from that
loser). I love working in the gray area between plicatas and luminatas so
expertly explored by Ghio and Keppel. I also am trying some things involving
my absolute favorite, Louisa's Song. My first few blooms from those should
come this spring.
