We also use a similar method for transporting iris. We start with a 5
gallon bucket. We buy the insulating foam used to wrap your pipes with in
the winter. We cut the pipe insulation to about half the depth of the
bucket. These pieces of pipe insulation come in several different
diameters. I use some of each for thinner and thicker stalks or even for
medians vs tb's. I stuff the bucket tightly full of these tubes. If you
don't pack the tubes tight enough when you add water the tubes will rise up
and try to float out of the bucket <G>. I then take this bucket with me out
to the garden for cutting my iris for the show. I can cut them and
immediately put them into water in the bucket. I take them in the house,
groom then, and whatever else needs doing. When it is time to go to the
show we put them back into the buckets and off we go. The weight of the
buckets is enough to keep them stable in your vehicle. I would suggest not
putting in too much water. A half bucket of water will make the bucket less
likely to turn over and easier to carry. I also made one of these for SDB's
using a 1 gallon ice cream bucket.
I have attached a link to a picture and information of the pipe insulation
for those of you who don't know what I mean. I am not advocating this
supplier or brand. Just wanted to answer any questions.
