Hi Donald,
I think I answered the first question in my reply to Linda Mann.
There is no requirement for a local iris society to be an affiliate. Most
become affiliates in order to receive a free AIS Bulletin for the society, to
get a set of silver and bronze medals for one iris show per year and to get a
free AIS slide program each year.
However, there are requirements to become an affiliate. All officers of the
local society must be AIS members and at least half of the local members must
be AIS members unless there are more than a certain number of total AIS
members in the local society. A timely application for affiliation must be
submitted to AIS each year. Local societies which do not otherwise qualify may pay a
fee to become an affiliate. Some of these societies prefer to buy a single
membership rather than pay the affiliation fee which is more costly. And some
societies, especially those which do not have iris shows, just opt out. I show
AIS convention slides every year to one of these latter societies about an
hour drive from me. They are small, don't meet the 50% AIS membership
requirement and don't have a show. Local members who are AIS members share their
Bulletins with non-AIS members. Three AIS judges who are among their members judge
at several shows in northern Ohio and attend regional meetings.
Unfortunately, such societies don't attract many new members because no one knows about
them. If you know someone who belongs to such a society, maybe you can get them
to put you on their mailing list.
