 ... or someone who is trying to be active is forced to be useless by 
those married to the status quo.  Many years ago, I joined our local 
saddle club.  Within a couple years, I was voted president.  When my term 
expired, I quit the club completely.  I had such plans for the club 
during my presidency - all sorts of activities I KNEW would be 
wonderfully received, greatly enjoyed, and tremendously beneficial.  Some 
smaller activities I was able to organize and implement myself, but the 
larger activities that required some group assistance and participation 
were invariably shot down.  "Oh, we tried that once TWENTY YEARS AGO, and 
it didn't work."

I enjoy tradition, but stagnancy and stubbornness will ultimately destroy 
any organization into which it settles.
