As to Spurias looking "strappy" or "starved" I have to chuckle. I grew up in
*I. missouriensis* country and spurias look fabulous in comparison. There
isn't another species that can match missouriensis clones for dismal, pathetic
attempts at being iris--and I loved them anyway.
Walking through a pasture (cattle won't touch the blessed things, so they
thrive and have a well-earned classification as noxious weeds) and looking
carefully at clump after clump the variation in patterning, coloring and form
reveals an astonishing range of beauty. It just takes time to forget the
grand and lush TB's, the sparklingly colorful medians and the grandly tall
spurias. Missouriensis is a thing all its own and, like spurias, the varied
clones have to be enjoyed for what they are, not for what they are not.
Like LA's, though, spurias do require a fair amount of space.....makes it
rather difficult for someone who has square feet, not acres, in which to grow
everything.
