I think this is its second full season here - I think it was a little
taller this fall than earlier, but I think it's always been tall.

No controlled experiments, but there are three climate factors that seem
to affect stalk height here - available soil moisture leading up to
bloom, cool temperatures leading up to bloom, moderate temperatures
during rapid growth (no abrupt freezes).

Lots of moisture and/or mulch results in taller stalks here.  So does
partial shade.  Some cultivars handle moisture variations better than
others (deep roots?).  Same for sudden hard freezes during rapid
growth.  Hot, dry weather leading up to fall bloom stunts some, doesn't
affect others as much.
