Re: Re: Re: AIS: spurias

Hi

Spurias do very well here in South Australia. If they get dry after blooming
they just die down and come away with the winter rains. But even if
irrigated through summer we don't get problems with rot as the do in the
more humind parts of the country.
A few years ago I gave a talk to a garden club in December, when the TBs had
finished but the spuria, Louisana JI etc were still blooming. So it was
bearded photos and real blooms of the other.

We also had some TB plants to sell. Forget the TBs, everyone wanted spurias.
The garden club was in an area that had dry alkaline soil, so the only
things we would recommend for such an area is beardeds and spurias.
Unfortunately spurias don't transplant well during blooms, especially when
follwed by a hot dry South Aust summer. When people see well grown spurias
they love them. We've never had enough Mahogany Lord to put in our
catalogue. Every year it sells out to garden visitors.

I'm post photos on iris-photos.
