Re: REF: New Iris Book

Good morning,

I have a copy of the book - it can be found on sale occasionally already.
It is a nice colorful book, but it will never be considered a standard as
a reference book. It is sort of a general overview of the genus Iris,
mostly through pictures. There is a fairly good text on history, brief
sections about the various classes of Iris (horticultural and botanical).
There is not much about individual species or cultivars beyond photos. The
photos cover a wide range of species and cultivars, but are by no means
comprehensive. I noticed several misidentified photos, but I suppose that
is inevitable in a book of this scope and size. For example 'Amas' is
depicted by a 44 chromosome type cultivar of I. x germanica (perhaps
'Susa', but that suggestion is likely wrong, since I am going from memory
of the photo). Since I don't have the book in front of me, I can't say
much more, but it is a well balanced representation of the genus Iris, and
the photos are beautiful. I would consider it a coffee table book, and a
good source for photos of a large number of cultivars, many of which are
not main stream well known ones.

Dave
