<< Anyhow to get back to iris, I have a new addition - Iris for every
Garden by Sidney Mitchell, 1949. >>
And from that same era, *The Iris, an Ideal Hardy Perennial,* published by
AIS under the direction of the Bulletin editor Geddes Douglas, who was real
good. There is a surprising amount of interesting stuff in that one. This is
what I consider the first of the AIS books, with *Garden Irises* being the
second and probably the most distinguished in its time, and *The World of Irises*
the most recent.
Some folks count John C. Wister's little 1927 book, *The Iris* as an AIS
book, but it was published by the Orange Judd company. Wister was AIS President
at the time, and that gave the book some cachet, but if there is some mention
in the record of it being a joint project with AIS, or AIS sharing in
profits, I have missed those references. If someone knows a reference to Wister's
book being an official AIS publication, please send me a citation. Thanks.
<<Also I have asked my public library to order Iris: A gardener's
encyclopedia for me so I can look before I buy.
I examined the new Austin work at some length at the bookstore the other
day. I'm reserving final opinion until I take another look, but my initial
impression is that, with the resources that Timber Press was prepared to put into
it----copious color, heavy paper, serious glossiness and heft--- a wonderful
opportunity to produce something really important and splendid was not
explored to the fullest. I think it might have been stronger had some additional
expertise been brought to the project as regards both text and photography.
