Re: HYB: Second Reblooming Diploid Open

Paul,
Fascinating stuff! I look forward to hearing what more
comes from your lines.
Plicatas from Swertii X mellita... very interesting.

That sort of fits with a theory I've been kicking
around -- that Iris suaveolens [mellita and/or
rubromarginata] always has a [dominant] gene for an
anthocyanin wash over the falls, and at the same time,
can either be homozygous glaciata (which would give
the pale yellow forms - with the slightly
purplish/gray falls) or non-glaciata (which would give
the rusty reddish purple forms -- with the fall
overlay not very obvious)... so... the
"anthocyanin-fall-wash" would override the glaciata
expression.

This theory would explain the 50:50 ration of
amoenas:purple-selfs in the offspring of KUPARI x
rubromarginata.

In a similar way, the plicata from Swertii could show
when/if the mellita contributes a glaciata gene.

Although... I would expect that there would still be a
faint wash of anthocyanin over the rest of the fall.
Do you remember if your plicatas might have had this?

As for albertii, I used to grow a clone that was
supposed to be that species, but I think someone on
the Iris-Photos forum indicated that what I had was
not albertii. In any case, I didn't have much success
in getting it to cross with any of my other diploids
-- very few seeds, even fewer of them well-formed, and
no germinations at all. Afterwards, I lost my plant,
and I haven't bothered trying to find it again.
Hopefully you'll have better luck with it.

And yes, I had also just recently seen Kasparek's
variegata that reblooms, and sure hope I can get one
to mix into my lines.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and good luck with
your strategies. Tom
