Wow, I hadn't heard of a reblooming I. mellita.
I also have a line with Kupari and was working on making a better pure white by crossing it with Taj Majal. I haven't seen any rebloom potential but the quality of the F1 is not that great and are ALL blues. So, I am hoping the F2 selections will have better plant qualities as well as whites. Limited fertility though, but the seedlings from the ones that did cross seem OK so far. Just a note (I think I have before on this list) that Taj Majal is actually a blue, not a white.
I also have a another (Taj Majal X Dogrose) line for better rose pinks and an (Swertii x I. mellita) line and am line breeding them as well. The seedlings are coming along great with no rebloom as yet and wasn't expecting any. I'm sure it greatly depends on the other parent and what it can contribute and may take a while to show itself. I thought it was interesting that I got a SOME pilactas from the (Swertii x I mellita) cross. So I. mellita must have some plicata genes in there somewhere even though there is no plicata showing and is required for the plicata genes from Swertii to compliment them and express in the flower. Something to look at in your lines, huh?!
A big goal for me is get some I. albertii to bloom now that I have gotten it to grow and grow fairly well without rotting. I have read that it is difficult to get seed from as pollen or pod parent so I may end up being incredibly frustrated when it does finally bloom and I can't get seed from it.
I'm also working on creating tetraploid from all of my diploid breeding to start incorporating them into other MTB and TB lines. I'm thinking maybe a tetraploid I. albetii might cross better than a diploid and seedlings might behave as an amphidiploid tendencies when crossed with other tetraploids as in the arilbreds. We'll see.
I'm not all that upset about the Tom Tit seedling as I only have a vague idea of what the other parent was... one of the other handlful of diploids in the same bed and could have even been a cross with a stay pollen grain from itself as it did look very much like Tom Tit. I tend to like planned crosses so I can know what the potential is and
how the seedlings differ from the parents as well as register the final selected seedlings.
Tom, you had seen the I. variegata offered at Zebra Gardens that reblooms early, right?
