Hi
When I "plan" crosses I often run into troubles, no pollen, no suitable blooms etc.
I often let the blooms talk to me and I carry a tub of my favourite pollens around with me, so when I see a partic characteristic in a plant I think about what I have that might complement that. eg a plant may have fantastic growth and branching, but small blooms, so I think about a good big bloom that might go well with it.
I occasionally do way-out crosses for the heck of it. Got one flowering now. Owyhee Desert x Overjoyed, just because they were growing next to each other and I use them both for breeding. Got a plant that has shortish stems with huge purple bitone blooms with white veining in the falls. Only seedling from the cross and not what I expected.
"what the heck" crosses can be fun and they can also prove to be a waste of time and space, but you don't know if you don't try.

Well, I do on occaision do "unplanned" crosses. I had flowers to spare and I like the flower size and foliage and growth on the Stairway and have like the foliage and growth and rebloom on the Select Circle. So, I figured why not and see what happens.
Others do this all the time, right? I imagine they'll be hafty and mostly muddly colors. Just pick a couple good siblings and cross those and play... if I have the room to grow them.

I believe it was 1987 when I moved both Beverly Sills and Victoria Falls
into the same bed, early in the summer. Victoria Falls bloomed that fall. I
quit counting the buds on VF at 18. Beverly had 5 stalks the next spring. It
was gorgeous. Then it promptly died! But it went out in a blaze of glory.
It bloomed here this past spring.
I have a pink line that includes Beverly Sills and some orange sporadic
rebloomers of about the same rebloom potential. (Sunset Sonata x Orange Empire).
No rebloom but I've not been able to trash the last two due to lace and
perfect branching. The deep rose mauve one has produced some gorgeous but weak
seedlings crossed by Candy Clouds.
