Re: Re: IRIS RE HYB:REB:REPORT

Griff in zones 5 & 6 I believe all iris roots freeze, in pots or below ground. Since most are less than 8" deep. Pots in the ground would work better more for the freeze thaw problem . Plus it would give a little more protection. Either way it will be risky.

I have had fall germinating SDB seedling make it through the winter in pots. But only about 50%. Never with TB's.

Just planted my seeds today. Trying them with the pots in the ground for the first time. Bad history of poor germination.

I don't think the chances of October-sprouting seedlings surviving your Missouri winter are very good, Rose. You might try bringing some into a not-too-warm environment, if you have one, and letting others sit out with a mulching of a couple of inches of pine straw, just to see if they'll make it that way. And I'd want the pots sitting below ground level, too, so the roots don't freeze. -- Griff

some of last years pots were
sprouting seedlings in mid October, what a suprise. Will they live through
the winter outdoors sprouting that late or will I need to move them indoors?
