Re: HYB:Returning Chameleon & Immortality

Okay, Betty -- We're on the same page as regards extracting the pollen from a "closed" anther, but such pollen usually isn't powdery or fluffy but ranges, instead, from a mushy paste to a "string" of pollen that will actually curl. Do you use pollen that comes out in either of those forms, and, if so, with what results? (I confess that I'm usually moving so fast that I don't make a record of the condition of the pollen.) -- Griff

Yes, or lay the anther flat and run a knife down the length of the anther
forcing the sheaths to 'pop' open revealing the pollen. Much of the pollen is
on the knife this way. Bridge In Time came from 46 seed and Returning
Chameleon came from 29.

As with other irises some years are just different. Could be I just got
lucky that year. Weather conditions can effect the presence or quality of the pollen. A freeze that may appear to leave a flower/stalk/bloom unaffected may
cause the pollen to be sterile.

In 2005 we had a late cold spell that lasted for a week or better. It
caused a mahogany seedling in the bud to turn green inside the bud! Honest! Later, all crosses I made with Summer Radiance & Pure As Gold were barren. Pollen looked okay. This year, the same two irises set seed like crazy. We also
had a cold spell this spring but it was later in the bloom process.
