Oh Linda, all this data must have taken ages to type, but it is so interesting, it was really worth it.
Thanks to share you results and comments, it will be of great help! Loic
You're quite welcome, Loic! Your climate, soil, cultural care may give
<very> different results, but I figure the more information we share,
the more we all benefit. It did take some time to type, but helps me
focus and contributes to planning future crosses.
Speaking to foliage health and strength in particular, which of the
reblooming irises would you say are giving the best seedlings? Betty
Answer to this is very skewed because I've only used a few rebloom
cultivars as parents - IMM (13), VIOLET MIRACLE (2 pod, 4 pollen),
HARVEST OF MEMORIES (20 pod, 5 pollen), TEA LEAVES (2 - stubborn!),
CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE (2 pod, 3 pollen), FEED BACK (3 pod), ENGLISH COTTAGE
(3 pod), RENOWN (4 pod), TWILIGHT FANCIES (2 pollen), VIOLET CLASSIC (2
pollen), LEGENDS OF FALL (1 pollen), MATRIX (4 pollen) & AUTUMN VELVET
(1 pod), always <trying> to use them as pod parent, except MATRIX, which
doesn't have health here to carry pods. Numbers in () are how many
crosses have surviving seedlings. I don't have summary data handy on
those that germinated but didn't survive or those that didn't germinate.
The strongest <seem> to be from IMM (or I wouldn't keep using it so
much), but germination is usually poor. The few MATRIX seedlings that
germinated and survived have been pretty strong. HoM is all over the
place, from terrible to excellent - depends on the spouse. TWILIGHT F
germinates & grow like mad, survive well, but not nearly as healthy.
Impression of FEED BACK and VIOLET MIRACLE seedlings is that they
germinate well, but are weak. Now that I've looked at the numbers, I
see I haven't really tried either of them much.
IMM rebloom seedlings (8 pod, 4 pollen) are variable, but above average.
Most of these haven't bloomed yet, so can't really comment on 'best'
other than strength. Prettiest kids so far have been F2 from IMM, but
not much rebloom. Most of the HoM seedlings are either ugly or very
small and old form. Or both <g>
