CULT:freeze & drought:update
Things looked bad in the spring. Then the drought hit. Little rain coupled
with high night and day temperatures stopped any chance for summer or early
fall bloom. With the spring damage I was afraid to fertilize and most of the
garden went without water. Again, I was afraid I'd only make things worse
for the plants.
All summer I was convinced I'd lost about half of everything newly planted
in 2006. This would include 2005/2006 seedlings, new purchases (approx 50)
and all of the seedlings that bloomed in the summer of 2006. The last group
upset me the most. I'd reset several of the most promising seedlings from the
2004/2005 seedling season. (I didn't lose any of these.)
Apparently most of the plants, even many of the 2005/2006 seedlings, had
simply gone dormant. I did lose some plants. Even the crosses that I thought
were wiped out are now showing signs of reviving. Not all, but a lot more
than I thought. I'm thankful for 7+ inches of rain and cooler temperatures.
I lost a few. Not bad.
