Unfortunately, Bill, irises aren't that easy up here in northern MN. I
lost over 200 cvs this year alone because of the extraordinarily
difficult weather patterns.
I do understand your point, though. During my talks, I emphasize the
incredible hardiness of the MDBs and SDBs in our climate, the amazing
array of colors, patterns, and heights available in this genus, and the
extended bloom season provided by a collection which includes all
classes and types of irises.
I don't, however, see any value in giving local gardeners false
impressions that may result in plant failure, so I do also note that
many TBs have not proven themselves tough enough to survive in my iris
beds. I figure if I can give attendees specific cultivar
recommendations of irises that have done well for me, I vastly increase
their odds of success if and when they do decide to take the iris
plunge.
Thank you for your input. "Keep it positive" has been duly noted!
