I had writen a reply to this post, but I don't see it in archives. So
reposting
Before deciding that these two plants are different, you need to pull off an
equivalent sized increase from each clump, and plant them side by side. Then
evaluate them over time.
In a crowded clump there could very well be small plants, that are too snall
to bloom in fll or spring, but having gone through vernalization, could bloom
later in season, giving apperarance of summer bloom, when actually it is a
delayed
plant. A new increase form each plant , given a fresh start will allow you to
properly evaluate if they indeed perform differntly. Comparing a long
established clump to a new plant , may only be comparing one growing
condition to another. Need to have same growing conditions and climate to
properly compare.

Subject: [iris] REB: Curious case of MATRIX vs MATRIX
Anybody miss me? My computer died in July. Just got the new one
(to me) up Friday night. No photo program yet, but soon.
Offhand, I can think of 3 possible explanations.
1 - The new one is not the same. Could be genetic 'drift' or even a
seed that managed to grow up. Unlikely.
2 - The new one has not fully adapted to life at your place. This has
taken a good 3 years here, when coming from radically different climate
and/or soil base.
3 - Location. No matter how much I amend the soil, I still have spots in
full sun where iris just don't seem to do as well. You would have to plant
them all together (old - new - old - new) to really test this theory. They
would also need to be same size when planted for comparison.
Your PFIC1 went backward this year, as did many others in the ridiculous
weather here. Specific whining on that subject will be coming soon in my
annual Indiana rebloom report.
Fall Maidens: Mesmerizer X Again And Again, Bonus Mama X Forever Blue,
2 of Twilight Fancies X Clarence (first one in August), 2 of Tenderly X
October Splendor, and a Silk Romance X October Splendor that freaked me
out by opening the first bloom flat. If any of these are going to set the
world on fire, they're hiding it well behind frost and stress damage.
