Thanks so much for the input. I was looking for the negatives. I've been moving some seedlings to 3 inch pots with good results, but I'm curious about the results of actually planting them (stage 1) in the plugs.

I've taken select crosses and planted the seedlings in the pots. After they've grown awhile I can determine the strongest of the bunch based on root development. They grow roots faster in new potting soil and I don't damage them when I transplant.

I use large plugs to grow the seedlings on after gaining some handleable size in
a group pot.

Soil plugs are really only usefule if you get near 100% germination. Even then germ will be erratic as we all know. Empty cells and seedlings growing at different rates and sizes will cause some plugs to stay wetter than others and
invite fungus gnats = disaster for your survival rate.

So you still have time to "plug up" your seedlings.

Bad timing, but my mind doesn't shut down just because we have a
holiday!

Mike Sutton: I seem to remember that you tried soil plugs for planting
about 5 years ago? I remember that you didn't have a positive
experience. Could you elaborate?

Anyone else tried planting individual iris seed in the soil plugs?
Care to report?

I could just do this myself, but I'll have to wait until next year
since this years seed have all been planted.
