I wonder if would be productive to think of flounce color as if it is part of the pattern, rather than as it's own color.  In that way, then maybe one could develop a black iris with a red zone that expresses only "under" the beard hairs, and thereby would express only on the petaloid.

If I were going to approach it from that angle I would assume that the way the hairs of the beard are pigmented is very important.  Search "agouti" in the photo archives to see some images that might add to this thought process.

Consider Beau Zam as starting stock, for your white with purple flounce.  Also, Triple Whammy is a yellow plicata with consistent petaloids showing lavender.

Or imagine if there were a way to get a black iris with a red flounce? Or
maybe white with a red or purple flounce?
Donbt know if anything like this is remotely possible but I can see it in my
head.

Ooh, I don't much care for space age irises, but a nice dark iris with a
small white zone and white flounce would certainly be eye catching. If
that would work.
