• Subject: yellow iris leaves. what is wrong?

A friend of mine has a problem with his irises.  He emailed the  following 
to me.
 

"I haven't joined Hort.net yet (maybe I should) and I have a  question
about my iris seedlings at Wes's. Some of the plants the leaves  are
almost yellow on the whole plant like I am missing something that  makes
the chlorophyll. My guess is iron, but I'm not sure. What do I  need
to add to fix the problem? I'm growing on clay soil here in the  valley."

Does anyone have an idea of what is  wrong?
