One observation that leads me to have some reservations about the validity
of the above statement as a broad generalization is that J. Marion Shull in
his iris book, Rainbow Fragments (1931), devotes four pages of text and two
photographic plates to describing the iris borer, the damage it causes, and
means of dealing with it. This is far more attention than he gives to any
other iris disease or pest, and seems to indicate that borers represented a
significant challenge to iris growers in his experience.

While Shull explicitly states that some iris varieties are more prone to
rhizome (soft) rot than others, he gives no indication that this is the
case with iris borer infestation.
