Nematodes

Over the last few days I have been in discussion with Dr. Randy Gaugler
of Rutgers University, a highly respected scientist working with
nematodes. He was not aware of any specific research that had been done
on nematodes and iris borer, and was unable to provide specific
information. He did however, state that," On the positive side, I
strongly suspect that your borer is highly susceptible to infection (ed:
treatment by nematodes), and nematodes in general have a good track
record against borers. But in the absense of data and knowing little of
the biology of this particular insect pest, this is all I can really
contribute."

We talked about the costs of doing research and what some controlled
studies might look like, etc. Then today, he turned up a research study
from the University of Maryland, which showed very good results using S.
carpocapsae (a nematode variety) against iris borer. Dr. Gaugler put me
in touch with Debby Smith-Fiola who is an extension agent. She will
hopefully help explain the research and what it means to us. I will
report back as soon as I have more to share.
