Anner,
Right up to this time the only possible source of new flower in former USSR
was botanical gardens that had some possibility to buy something abroad.
After Second World War many german and possible european irises was
received by botanical gardens and preserved there. Here was not good
economical conditions to hybridise and introduce new irises, so the USSR
becam a reservation for old irises. (A list I enclose now show it. Note, it
is a FULL list of collection in 1992 year ! But note, it is Novosibirsk,
Siberia). During 1980-1983 a group of enthusiasts directed by Peter
Hattenberger collect a data on irises presented in personal collections and
collections of botanical gardens of the USSR. This list count 776 variety,
I think a
half is before 1950th. Unfortunately I have no time to process this list
now.
Much more unfortunately I think many historics was lost during this 15 hard
years of "perestroika".Here peoples haven't a lot of ground so are forced
to choose: oldie or new variety. In addition many choose between garden of
flowers and garden of vegetables.
However many historics can be found here.
