I understand, Juri. I thought that might be the explanation. This is a very
wonderful thing for those who want to preserve the old irises! This list you
posted and the other list you sent me privately contain many old irises which
are not known to survive anywhere else according to the latest information I
have from The Historic Iris Preservation Society. Your information is very
important and I have sent the lists to the HIPS International Director Dr Art
Tucker, to Clarence Mahan, and to Mike Lowe. I believe they will be as
delighted as I am to have your information.
<<During 1980-1983 a group of enthusiasts directed by Peter
Hattenberger collect a data on irises presented in personal collections and
collections of botanical gardens of the USSR. This list count 776 variety,
I think a half is before 1950th. Unfortunately I have no time to process
this list now.>>
I have not heard anything about this before. I will ask Clarence and Mike if
HIPS knows about this project. If they do not, perhaps later when it is
convenient you will be able to send this to me. You might send it on paper in
the Russian Language if you like. I have a friend who was born in Riga who
can translate it.
This is very exciting and I know all people who love the oldies also are
happy to hear that so many have survived in your part of the world.
Thank you so much, Juri, for this happy news.
