Diana,
I don't know if this is the proper thing to do, but it worked for me
when I lived in Kentucky. In the fall, I did not remove individual leaves
on the Japanese Irises. Instead, I waited until the fall freezes killed
the leaves, then I cut them all off a couple of inches above the Pine Bark
(small), then mulched over that with straw.
Now, as I continue with my Florida Iris Experiment, I will cut the
leaves down after they get killed down. (This area is not Frost-Free.)
However, I already have them mulched with Pine Needles to conserve
moisture. In fact, if you have access to Pine Needles, I would recommend
that over straw. By the way, the Pine Needles are free since there are
several large Pines on the property here.
