Hi, Marte! I've wondered about this a lot and have come to the conclusion
that excessive rain damages plants that are susceptible to water damage as
much as top-down watering will. If you think about it, we're tempted to
top-down water when there hasn't been rain for a while and we're tired of
running the hose every day. We have to water every day because we aren't
watering the whole yard at one time and so the water we lay out doesn't
last as long.

If it rained every day, those plants would suffer the same sort of damage -
a situation we often see here in Arkansas when extra rainy springs inspire
outbreaks of leaf spot and soft rot.

If you live where it can rain every day for weeks, you know rain is like
sex. Just because you want it doesn't mean you want it every minute of
every day.
No wisecracks! You know what I mean.
