After a few hard frosts and the foliage starts to go rusty brown and start to
fall over. The plants are then starting to go dormant. The main reason for
cutting off the foliage is to prevent field mice (voles) from making a nest
under the collapsed foliage and eating the rhizomes during the winter. The
second reason is; to remove the old foliage which may contain borer eggs
and/or foliage thrip eggs. You will notice some green leaves of increase
fans and the green centers of the larger fans when you cut them off -- 1 or 2
inches from the ground...that's normal and okay.
