OT-BIO Helen Crotty

Greetings!

My name is Helen Crotty, and I live in the mountains about midway between=

Albuquerque and Santa Fe at the 7000-foot elevation, USDA Hardiness Zone =
5,
Sunset Zone 2. I've been growing iris for about ten years, but only
joined the New Mexico Iris Society in July of l996. Last spring I joined=

the American Iris Society and the Reblooming Iris Society, and last summe=
r,
the Santa Fe Iris Society--really hooked, I guess one could say.

I've been reading the Iris-List e-mail messages for the past week and
anxiously awaiting the AIS October Bulletin, which finally arrived today.=
  =

Having acquired THORNBIRD at the NMIS sale last summer, I'm looking forwa=
rd
to seeing what kinds of horns or flounces of what color it will produce f=
or
me. I also bought a lot (too many, when it came time to plant them!) of=

rebloomers at the sale and from catalogues this year and expect to have
some success with them eventually. None of the recent purchases has
bloomed yet. I'm envious of those reporting rebloom on their new plants=
=2E =

I really like the idea of an everbloomer and hope that it will be possib=
le
to order some from Canada with members of one of the local societies. =

This past spring was my best iris season yet, probably because of the
summer rains and winter snows we enjoyed last year. So far this year
we've measured nearly 20 inches of precipitation, far above average for
here, but most of it came before the summer monsoon season. It would be=

nice if El Nino wouldl bring another wet winter. =

I'm hoping to attend the convention in Denver next June, but it's a busy
time of year, and I hate to be away from my iris when they're blooming. =
 =

Meanwhile, I enjoy the e-mail exchange and expect to learn a lot.
