Cult:cover crops

With all the discussion of cover crops, I have noticed that  alfalfa  is =
never mentioned as a cover crop. Since alfalfa is used as a soil =
amendment  for irises, why wouldn't it make a good green manure? Could =
be that I know absolutely nada about alfalfa as a crop, but thought I'd =
pose the question.
