OT-BIO: Kathy Haggstrom

I'm a new sign on as of 11-21-97 & a Bio was requested. Name: Kathy
Haggstrom. Live in Anchorage, Alaska. Zone 3. My main  interest is Iris
setosa - the only Iris that grows wild in Ak. Most other species don't
make it well, even under cultivation so it's hard for me to get excited
about them. Siberians will die out in a cold winter. I have no Botanical
/Horticultural degrees or training. I have been trying to develop
several lines of I. setosa that are very promising, but I struggle with
my lack of experience/knowledge. My main area of ignorance is breeding
programs (how to develop certain colors, characteristics). I think I am
taking longer than I should because I just cross color to color, form to
form etc. I don't know much about back crossing etc. I will definitely
appreciate any little bit of information passed my way, no matter how
small it seems. I have a certain amount of practical knowledge of I.
setosa, but you can't underestimate my ignorance in some areas. Oh yes,
I will be marketing my first line of setosa locally thru a Greenhouse
next spring. It pleases me to be part of an actual Iris talk group.
