Rick,
Twice, I tried to grow Iris setosa in Kentucky. Twice, it failed.
The first attempt involved a plant of questionable quality. The second
attempt was with an excellent plant from Arnold Koekkoek. It both
attempts, the plants survived the winter and died during the summer. It
appears that this species is not suitable for climate that are subject to
having a run of muggy nights with the temperature over 75 F or about 24 C.
It is a very pretty plant, however, and I am glad that it is being
used in hybridizing. Its use in breeding with Siberians (result: Sibtosa)
might result in more cold hardy Siberians and heat tolerant setosas.
Keep us posted on how they do.
