Belamcanda growns very well in Ottawa, which is Zone 4B and the
impression that I get is that it would go at least one zone colder. I
particularly like this plant because it flower a lot, survives well, and
more importantly, it is the last irid to flower in the season, usually
flowering from late August into the first week of September.
The late flowering suggests that it is a warm region plant that requires
quite a few degree days to reach flowering. Similarly, I have a Mexican
Sunflower that my wife picked up at a plant sale (sometimes I feel these
plant sales should be banned!) that does not flower until October and
is, then, immediately hit by the frost. It is a perennial that grows to
nearly 10ft each year with a covering of 4 inch diameter flowers.
Obviously, it would prefer to be growing about 1000 miles further south.
Ian, in Ottawa where it is a beautiful sunny day, about -10C with 6
inches of snow.
