Re: Iris from Seed

About five or ten years ago (if my memory serves me right, I am over 40, so
my memory can go any day) Keith Keppel wrote a short blurb in the AIS
Bulletin about seed germination. He planted his seeds in sand and had a
soaker hose that would continuously drip water over the seeds. I believe the
article stated he had a 90%+ germination rate. Does anyone on Iris-L know
which AIS Bulletin this is in??

I work with TB's and believe that lots of water, lots of ice cold water,
brings about the best TB seed germination. I live in an area where snow,
ice, and good cold weather is plentiful. I pile snow and dump water on my
raised seedling frame all winter long until it's over 4 feet high. I get
wonderful seed germination (over 60%) using this method. If I lived in a
place where there wasn't any cold weather, I would consider freezing blocks
of water and putting them over the seeds and have that cold water run over
them.
