Traditional use of Orris root as a medicinal is to rout infections. The sliced root is applied directly to wounds that are not deep. Deep wounds are treated with a "cold tea".... Water that the sliced root has been kept in at least 3 hours.
I've use the root for this purpose and IMHO, it works as well or better than most over-the-counter remedies.
The dried root was also given to teething infants. Supposedly it reduced the pain while giving them something to chew on.
