There was quite a bit of discussion of sand as a mulch for bearded irises
on this list not too far back. Might be worth checking into.

Snow, as long as it stays frozen, is not really "moist". Around here, we
only observe moisture problems from snow when it melts in the early
(hopefully) Spring.
