Kathy Guest asked about mulch for irises:
>I wonder if pine straw would work??
I have used pine needles for both bearded and beardless irises
in the past but last year the snow came early the first of Nov.
(hey, that's today..better look out the window) and I didn't
have a chance to 'mulch'.
The upshot is that things were just fine including the TBs. Pine
needles are porous and don't soak the rhizome. However, I did
pull the needles away from the rhizome in the Spring which is
April here not March. I also had about an inch of soil that
I pulled back. Last year, nothing on the bearded at all and we
had good bloom, etc. So, I don't argue with success and less
garden work for me. :)
Cheers,
Ellen
