Kathy, I mulched tall bearded irises in Ohio for years. Grew them for 18-20
years and used hardwood mulch over them. My process:
Mulch in the fall. Mulch around the iris very heavily to inhibit weed growth
and lightly over the irises themselves. I always did this after I had cut
them back for the winter. In early spring (about March in Columbus) I pulled
the mulch away that I had placed directly over the iris to just around the
clump. Hardwood mulch tends to break down into the soil over the summer, so
the process had to be repeated each fall.
I grew 600+ TB's at my home and 300+ at the senior citizens center in the
city. All were mulched in this manner....all very successfully.
I moved to Florida on the 15th of October. I am presently growing about 130
LA's here and mulch is a must.
Hope this helps.
