Dear Kathy , When one of my daughters lived in R.I. (due to a navy husband)
She mulched everything, her irises were under several inches of pine needles
and chips with no problems, so I adopted the idea (here in Baltimore suburbs)
much to the horror of our foumding fathers BUT I did not cover the rhizomes as
my daughter did, but put it sort of around them to help cut down on the weeds
- and it wasn't too long before others did it too. I mujst say that I put
handsfull of sand (went to the quarry and bought coarser than playsand - also
cheaper) on top of each rhizome which helped prevent heaving . If it wasn't
off by Spring, then I brushed it and any mulch off the rz (is that the
shortened form of rhizome) that had been washed on thru the winter ---and the
sand has helped the soil
I think different parts of the country have their own problems -- For my JIs
and sibs, I put oak leaves first (having cut them down to 2 " or so) and then
pile mulch on several inches deep after a frost. In late May or so I push it
aside when the green shoots start.-- AND water. That works for me when I can
do it. Be seeing you soon?! Rosalie, nr Baltimore, Reg 4,zone 7 they tell
me- ryfigge@aol.com A BEEyuteeful day!
