Dennis,
For your climate, I would recommend sinking the pots in the ground in
the garden, and then mulching them. Sink the pots to the depth that the
soil inside the pots is level with the soil outside the pots. Having them
in pots out of the ground is equal to being about two hardiness zones
north. Also, the temperature of the soil in the pots will fluctuate wildly
unless the pots are sunk into the ground. Then, there is the problem of
desiccation caused by strong winter winds if the pots remain on the
patio...
